Is anybody doing anything fun I can join in with at the Jubilee Weekend? I am at a loose end as Boy will be off flinging himself down rivers in Italy. Things involving cake particularly welcome.

Note to self: if you get the job in Denmark, renew your passport before you go, because it costs twice as much to do from abroad even if it's not very far away from home.

Correction. Sunday: did lots of stuff, forgot medicine. So today everything seems a little bit loud and weird.

I have however done some useful thinking. And I have checked a specimen I made last week which I thought would be so rubbish I nearly put "blank carbon support grid" in the log book because there wouldn't be anything there, and it's actually quite good. So that was strange.

But I would really like to stop feeling like I'm on a ferry now.

Also I had a really good idea for making people wash their hands - why don't we sell soap in orange boxes with gently glowing pictures of noses, in the cold and flu section of the chemist? Because washing your hands is quite a good way of not passing on a cold, but people don't seem to do it with the same emphasis as taking echinacea and lemsip. But if we put it in the cold section as well as the shower gel section maybe they would.

So I read this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18033198
And now I want to set up a science blog with pictures of me, being a woman, doing science, and other women and men doing it too, and some of the stuff we do.

So I am doing that, but I need a blog name. Any ideas?

Well, work has started working. Fingers crossed.

I got my Olympic shifts. There are loads! 24 days! I am going to be knackered! But I haven't turned them down yet. Except the one which is on Liz's wedding day which I am going to have to swap out.

I still have an enormous to-do list. But it is for some reason feeling less huge now.

When did I last do an update? Earlier this week I think. Um, I have done some work. And some other stuff. And not much else. And today Nice Little Microscope started doing things all on its own and beeping loudly. This was the same batch of samples where a different microscope broke the holder and got itself all stuck a few weeks ago. I am starting to wonder if this project is haunted.

Ok I have done a bit of work (finding out that my methods are wrong and I need to do something else = useful, right?) and a bit of housework (I can see the bedroom floor even). That's about it for updates...

It has come to my attention that there are 4 countries (ish) beginning with J:
-Jamaica
-Japan
-Jersey
-Jordan
I have visited 2 of these. Surely it must be possible to visit the other two. Now Jersey is probably easy, Jamaica less so. But also sunny. Maybe I should add this to my life's goals. Don't whatever you do start another J-country with hardline religious rulers and chronic war, ok?

Augh. My ear has been a bit crunchy-sounding when I eat for coming up to two weeks now. And it hurts sometimes. I had this just after Andy died when I got really cold for ages. I need to take this ear to the doctor. And my shins where they hurt after a very small amount of running.

wtf wtf
I went to go and use Big Scary Microscope and the door to the room won't open. Not the door that you need a key for, the one that nobody ever locks. So either some mystery person has come and locked it or it is broken! My money is on broken. So I have to sit and wait for Estates to come and fix it :/

The spare worms I got a few weeks ago have munched their way through all the food that was in the wormery when they arrived and are becoming monsters. I have bought greens to have with my tea just so that I can produce some food waste from the stems to keep feeding them so they don't start on me. (And of course because greens are good for you!) And they are producing liquid at an enormous rate, and this time I am draining it off properly. My garden will consequently also be huge.

Meanwhile I had a kohl rabi plant that was looking a bit peaky so I put it outside to give it some extra sun and now it is just a stem with no leaves on :( slugs are awake again!

I went to Anglesey and went in the sea, it was great. And now I am home and have a giant pile of camping crap to sort out. Yay for holidays!

Wooo I went in the river wooo it was great.

And I have put on some more circumference because now my thermals aren't just a bit too small, they definitely don't fit. In many ways this is a good thing because my old thermals didn't actually meet at the waist and that gap is where the water washes over the spraydeck so I got a cold back. So now I have ordered some better thermals in men's sizes (might actually fit somebody over 5'3" without leaving a gaping gap in the middle) which hopefully should arrive in time for Anglesey. Hopefully.

What else did I do? Not much. Time for some housework. I am very tired after yesterday!

Got up early, went to Olympic training. Learned a lot. Lots of free cake. Met Liz and Geoff for tea, yay. Came home zzz. Noticed it was nearly freezing and got seedlings indoors. Also noticed envelope of new worms on doormat so brought the wormery in and put them in it. Good luck little worms.

So this week I have had *two* bad microscopy days - one through not knowing the right stuff, which I am learning, and one through equipment breakage that I suspect we didn't cause but did make some poor decisons that made it worse. So I have learned a lot this week, and I could really do with Andy to reassure me I'm not inept.

Also I have been spreading myself too thin, in that I'm only just managing to keep this place hygienic and the plants alive and crawling forward in everything else. And everybody else seems to be feeling the same too. Just slow down, life.

And on Saturday I have to get a 6:25am train. Aughhh.

Will somebody please tell me what happened in Upstairs Downstairs number 5?! It's fallen off iPlayer and I missed loads. Hopefully there will be spoilers in the comments...

Notes to self:
-Yes you have sorted out Robs's birthday present
-The word for that thing is called a right spherical triangle and the sphere is the Ewald sphere write down the kV please and it's page 13 W&C
-Don't worry just take the pictures and write stuff down and do the maths next week.

Taking my moral guidance from that most erudite of sources, I saw a woman on Eggheads who was going to do 60 new things in the year of her 60th birthday. So maybe I should do 30 new things in the year of my 30th birthday. Any suggestions? Nothing involving heights!

Ooh time for an update.

I went to visit Tish and Oli and their puppydog and the other fluffy animals. It was great. Lots of sunshine and good company (Laura came over for dinner too). Yay yay.

Today I forgot loads of useful stuff for work and got up late because the clocks went back, but I have done some useful stuff too. I got the results back from my operation and I definitely didn't have cancer (I thought I already didn't have cancer, that's what they told me before). So I am back to normal person status in 6 months' time. What else...I have grapes. It's still sunny. My garden is growing!

I think I need to make a lookup table of colleagues with how many emails it takes to get them to answer and then how many to do stuff. I am reminded that the two numbers are not one for a lot of people.
